When I first heard about a new prequel to Game of Thrones (A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms) I instantly got curious about the cast. One name that came to my mind was of Daeron Targaryen (also known as Daeron the Drunken). This character is not as popular as other Targaryens but he has a unique story.
So who could be playing this Daeron Targaryen? HBO has announced that Henry Ashton will play this role. If you’re like me and you might not familiar with Henry Ashton then don’t worry because I have tried to present everything about him and the character he will going to play.
So stay tuned to the end.
Henry Ashton: The Man Who Will Play Daeron
He isn’t a household name just yet but I believe he’s well on his way and maybe after playing this character. He has been making a name for himself on British TV with the roles in shows like Outlander and A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder. He has shown his ability to play complex characters through these roles which becomes very important when playing someone like Daeron the Drunken.
His role as Daeron will be his first major part in the world of Westeros and I think this could be a breakthrough moment for him. He has the ability to bring the right mix of charm and despair to a character who despite his flaws has a god gift that sets him apart from the typical drunken prince trope.
Why Henry Ashton is Perfect for Daeron the Drunken?
When I think about Daeron the Drunken, I picture someone who is complex and someone who generally hides behind alcohol and has a carefree attitude but who also carries the weight of the Targaryen legacy. His previous roles suggest he can balance these layers. He has played characters who are more than they seem on the surface which is exactly what Daeron needs.
Daeron isn’t just a drunk where he is someone who sees visions of the future which gives his character a depth that might surprise people who only know him by his nickname. I’m confident that Ashton will be able to portray this duality and make Daeron both a tragic and sympathetic figure in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

What Is the Character of Daeron the Drunken?
Now that we’ve talked about who could be playing Daeron Targaryen, it is time to know about the character himself. Daeron the Drunken isn’t your typical Targaryen. While many of his family members are known for their dragon-riding skills and thirst for power but Daeron took a very different path.
Daeron’s Backstory: A Life in the Shadows
He was the eldest son of King Maekar I Targaryen and while you might expect the eldest son to be the heir but he was never really interested in ruling. Instead, he spent most of his life in Summerhall which is one of the Targaryens’ more pleasant residences. He preferred the company of wine and mistresses over the responsibilities of the throne.
I find it interesting that Daeron despite being the firstborn was so disconnected from the usual Targaryen ambition. His lack of interest in power made him an outsider in his own family which is probably the reason why he turned to alcohol. He was more interested in avoiding the throne than claiming it.
The Prophetic Drunk
One of the most fascinating aspects of Daeron’s character is his ability to see the future. He had the gift of prophecy, unlike other Targaryens who were famous for their dragon-riding skills. He saw cryptic visions in his dreams and many of which came true. However, these visions didn’t bring him peace where they only added to his misery.
His prophetic abilities make him a tragic figure. I can’t help but wonder if he drank to drown out the visions just to escape the burden of knowing what was to come. His prophecies were often dark and filled with doom which only fueled his despair. This combination of foresight and helplessness made him a complex character and one who stands out in the Targaryen family tree.

Daeron’s Role in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms
He will likely be portrayed as a reluctant participant in the power struggles of his time in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. While his brothers were always eager to fight and prove themselves but Daeron preferred to stay on the sidelines. However, his prophetic dreams often dragged him into conflicts he would have rather avoided.
I’m looking forward to seeing how A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms handles his character. Will he be shown as a tragic figure who couldn’t escape his destiny or will we see a more humorous side to his drunken escapades? If we see the given tone of the Dunk and Egg stories then I expect we’ll get a bit of both.
